Our main business is highway buses, but we also operate regular route buses, charter buses, and an on-demand bus service that incorporates the latest technology. Safety is of the utmost importance for a bus service. Still, ensuring safety puts a much greater burden on the driver's attentiveness and driving ability compared with other public transportation options. That's why we established our \"Safety Training Center\" in June 2013 as a means of enhancing the driving safety education our drivers receive. Installed on this crew training car is the \"Bus Operation Data Recording System,\" which KYOWA provided to us as a packaged solution. There are compact cameras installed on the left and right mirror brackets and mirrors, and the instructor can check the left and right sides of the vehicle from the instructor's seat. A millimeter-wave radar measures the distance from the front of the vehicle to preceding vehicles. The side distance measurement sensors measure the distance between the vehicle and walls, guard rails, and other vehicles, while also allowing the instructor to check for any discrepancies with what the driver is perceiving. The viewpoint monitoring equipment (Eye-mark recorder) visualizes the movement of the driver's eyes. They're required to do this at our Safety Training Center in Sano, Tochigi Prefecture. The issue we were facing was that our drivers and their instructors were relying on experience and intuition. For example, a driver has to check his mirrors before starting off. Even if the driver says out loud that he's checked his mirrors, the instructor doesn't know for sure whether he really did this. We can now use an Eye-mark recorder to check whether a driver actually checked his mirrors, and the instructor can provide instruction while checking data showing how much the driver is depressing the accelerator and brake pedals, as well as the degree of G-force caused by this. By the way, the degree of G-force measured by the acceleration sensor is directly related to the ride comfort passengers feel, and the system allows the instructor to provide instruction and make comparisons based on data instead of intuition, which is very important. Instead of telling the driver to \"avoid sudden braking\" or to \"depress the pedal slowly,\" he can now provide data-based instruction, such as the precise accelerator and brake pedal positions. It's important to raise the overall level of safety throughout the entire bus industry, and I think that increasing safety will get more people to choose to ride the bus instead of driving on their own or flying. The \"Bus Operation Data Recording System\" is helping to improve ride comfort while prioritizing safety, and I think it's this comfort that will help us attract repeat customers.\n\nIf tools such as AI could be used to more closely analyze and compare the data we collect, I think it would make the \"Bus Operation Data Recording System\" even more useful. The system we're using now is installed on the highway bus we use for training. If the system could be made more compact so that it could be installed on urban route buses and other vehicles, it could be used to gather big data and further enhance safety.
